I’m convinced that it’s never too soon to start talking to one’s children about a paying career for when they “grow up“.
Case in point:
On the way to school today child #4 asked me if he should be a Pharmacist like his daddy when he grows up.
I responded, “Well, that’s a great job, but sometimes daddy gets bored, so maybe you should be a doctor and help people get well”.
He responded, “no”.
Just no.
And then he said, “I think I’ll be a crossing-person”. As in crossing guard.
You know, that career whereby no money is exchanged for time?
Now, call me money hungry, but when my children enter the work force, I’m kind of hoping that they’ll actually earn money for their endeavors.
The long term goal is NOT to support them for the rest of their lives.

Amen! I’m trying to tell my 4 year old that being a princess is a great goal if she can actually meet and marry a prince and my son wants to be Mickey Mouse. Not sure that’s the best career choice either.
We just need them to pick something that allows them to move out right?

I remeber when my now 14 yr old daughter use to tell us what she wanted to be when she grew up. I think she changed her mind 20 times so far and I am sure she will a couple more times before she decides for sure.

Amen, sister. At some point these kids need to get out of my house and of my payroll.
It’s so funny to hear of little one’s dreams. Child #4 has always had a dream of being an ice cream man. Not sure if it is the ice cream that is the big draw or getting to drive a truck that plays music. I think we have him convinced that being an ice cream man is not really a profession so now he seems to be leaning more towards being a fire man. Glad he still has lots of time to make up his mind!

My little nephew always used to say he wanted to be a garbage truck driver. Used to drive his parents crazy – both very type A financially successful people.
Then one day I told him, “Wouldn’t you like to be the owner of the garage truck company? Then you can drive any of the trucks any time you want. And you could even decide what colors to paint them.” He LOVED that idea!
So, maybe #4 wants to own a crossing guard company. He can hire employees and place them. He could even work as a guard when someone was sick. Just a thought.
I think you should make him get a job now JUST for saying that he wants to be a crossing guard. That is almost just like the dudes that paint house numbers on the curbs.

Ah yes, there is that hope that they either land a wonderful job or marry someone with one 🙂 My daughter still wants to be a princess when she grows up, I am not averse to that notion so long as her prince is not the impoverished kind 🙂

You’re so freaking right!!! Your main goal should be to encourage them to make enough money to support YOU when you’re old and wrinkly!!! Heehee…I sure have my priorities in order, huh?
I’d like to keep the small one around forever. He has to work and make some cash though. Because, you know, I don’t intend to!

Well sometimes police direct traffic, so maybe you can segue his traffic dreams into cop dreams.
Though that could be dangerous.
And I was going to suggest trying to work pharmacist in there.
But then you’re encouraging giving out drugs on street corners and I feel that’s not the right direction either.
My middle one (who is naturally very smart) wants to be a waitress. At least she’ll make good tips?
