Wordful Wednesday – Thankful for the Eradication of the Infection

This post may not be the best for the squeamish, and if these photos gross you out, my apologies in advance!

In August while I was at BlogHer my husband called me and told me that #5 had an abscess in his mouth.  When I took him to the dentist when I returned home (of course it happened over the weekend) the dentist took an X-Ray and sent him straight to an Oral Surgeon.  The Oral Surgeon took X-Rays and decided that a tooth needed to go in order to curb the infection.  So, he pulled tooth number one.  Unfortunately a few weeks later, he had another infection which a round of antibiotics cured.  And then the infection came back again.  At this point we knew we hadn’t gotten to the “root” of the problem and the Oral Surgeon performed oral surgery number 2.   He opened up his gums around the infection site.  This surgery revealed that the infection was in the other tooth.  The other tooth couldn’t be saved so tooth number 2 had to be pulled as well.

It’s been a long, frustrating and sad roller coaster ride.  No 5 year old should have to have 3 oral surgeries over the course of 3 months.  Even if he was a complete trooper with a ready smile and sunny attitude.

In the end we found out that the reason he had an abscess is because his nerve was hit during a routine filling and it killed the tooth, unbeknownst to us.  When he complained about his tooth hurting FOR MONTHS, I took him back to the dentist and they said he was “teething”, that his 6 year molars were coming in.  I told #5 to stop being a whiner.  Months later the infection came to a head and this string of dentist after dentist appointments and surgery after surgery began, and this mama feels so badly.

I found out that #5 was not being a whiner and he’d been in pain with an infection for months, and ALL as a RESULT of a filling gone wrong.

This mama is having a hard time NOT being angry, but at the same time, she’s just so happy that the infection is gone.

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I have so much to be Thankful for, and right now I’m so very thankful that my “baby” is healthy, and I have a warm home and a big family full of love and lots of good food to eat.

What are you thankful for?

Wordful Wednesday is like Wordless Wednesday, only WITH words. It’s for those of us that can’t contain the chatter, but in a good way.

*Don’t forget to share what you are THANKFUL for with us! Please use the second linky for your submission.  There’s a reward in it for you, too! Three lucky linkers who keep with the theme AND link back to Wordful Wednesday (we know everyone links up to a ton of different meme’s and we’re totally cool with that, but if we’re gonna give us a prize, we just need you to share our Wordful Wednesday link on your site) will be gifted with 25 free holiday cards from Shutterfly!

  1. So cute, Angie. My son lost two molars in the last month. It was lovely, lol. One of them we were out with friends and he said, “Here, mom,” then handed me a bloody tooth. 🙂

  2. I meant HE is so cute, not the bloody tooth, lol. Glad the infection is eradicated!

  3. No you did NOT just show that!

PS. Can you take me off the 2nd linky? I hit the wrong one. Sorry!

  4. So, I’m normally extremely squeamish, but I found the pics cool. It’s not everyday you get to see what an extracted tooth looks like! Happy WW!

  5. Infection out no matter what! 🙂
(My squeamishness departed simultaneously with twins traversing the birth canal!)

  6. Wow! Those are really graphic. lol. Thanks for the warning.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family, fun, and lots of good food!

  7. So glad that the infection is gone! Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Angie. 🙂

    • HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO you! I forgot to write the story about the pictures. ECK. It’s there now though. 🙂

      • Oh my goodness! Poor guy! I’d be angry too. I think it’s totally okay to be angry and thankful at the same time. Your poor baby had to deal with all that pain as a result of human error. Try not to be too hard on yourself. You’re just being a mom. 🙂 So glad that this ordeal is over!

  8. Yikes! Poor kid.

I just got a crown on a tooth and 4 fillings, so I can relate a bit. It is amazing how painful your mouth can be!

  9. Um. Wow! That’s all I can say about that. 🙂

  10. Ohhhhh! Poor guy! Princess Nagger had the same problem – caused by the same thing and at the same age! It was me that thought it was her 6-year molars trying to come in, but when she got sent home from school (and got dinged for a half-day even though there was only 15 minutes of school left) I thought she was just being a Drama Queen. Except she woke up the next morning with blood all over her face. Our dentist is off on Friday’s but she opened her office just for PN to pull the tooth – it’s heart wrenching to see such little ones go through that kind of pain. Glad he’s doing OK – and what a cute trooper he is! 🙂

  11. OUCH. What a brave guy … and mama!!

  12. I understand you being angry. I hope you are going to address the mistake with the proper people. Teaching moment for me to be more aware and educated on everything regardless my children’s health. I’ve seen too many mistakes in the medical field to not trust fully; after all doctors, dentist, etc are humans. We the parent are our best advocates. So sorry to hear this happened. But happy to know he is healed.

  13. OMG that poor baby! I sure hope he’s feeling better and missing that tooth won’t effect his ability to eat turkey!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Angie!!! xoxo

  14. Arrrgh, dentists are my worst fear! Poor kiddo. Glad to hear it’s all better now. What a trooper!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  15. Awww, what a trooper! I’m sure he’s happy not to be in pain anymore! And don’t feel too bad, a girlfriend of mine let her LO go around with his shoulder out of its socket for two weeks (!!!) after her son and husband played that spin-your-kid-around-in-a-circle-by-the-wrists game. He complained about his shoulder hurting and they thought he was just looking for attention. Luckily, she brought him in to the doc and they diagnosed it! AGH!

And with that, I hope you and fam have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I’m sure #5 will get to enjoy eating without that annoying tooth ache! 😉

  16. in my best sing-song voice:
    I have a new grandbaby!
    Grandbaby number 2!
    She’s perfect in every way!
That’s what I am thankful for!
    Happy birthday Fallon Elizabeth!

  17. Oh my goodness! That is AWFUL! Poor little guy! I hope he heals quickly and all the pain is behind him now (and you too).

  18. Oh…Owie. Glad you’re on the mend now. {And yuck! You did warn us!}

  19. Ummm….I said “you’re.” I mean “he’s.” I know that’s not you with a drastic haircut in the pics.

  20. That poor kid! What a terrible situation. Glad that the cause of all his pain was discovered and hopefully he can heal quickly and have many many years before he needs anymore oral surgery. You must be so frustrated with that dentist that hit his nerve. What a jerk! Good job staying calm Mama. Don’t think I could do the same…

  21. Wow! What an ordeal.

And if it makes you feel any better, I probably would have told my kid to stop whining about his tooth hurting. ‘Teething’ seems like a logical explanation.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving.

  22. OMGoodness!! THat poor little dude! My kids complain all the time about aches, pains, boo-boos and very often I tell them to toughen up. Your story is my biggest fear. I’ll blow them off and it IS something serious! I’m just glad your little guy is doing better! What a little trooper!!

  23. Happy Happy Thanksgiving to you + yours!! xoxo.

  24. poor baby. But glad that the infection is gone! Hope you have a great thanksgiving

  25. Yikes, your little guy has gone through a lot. I hope he is feeling better now though.

  26. Oh, poor kiddo :/ yikes. Tough guy though 🙂

  27. Oh, poor guy! That must have been so painful, but thankfully kiddos are far more tolerant/resilient than adults (and hopefully they won’t remember everything, either;).
I remember my mom talking about my younger brother crying incessantly for weeks when he was little, only to finally take him in and find that “he has one of the worst ear infections [the doctor] has ever seen.” Talk about a Bad Mommy moment.
There’s no way you could have known, and you did the best you could… thankfully all is well now!
    Happy– and healthy– Thanksgiving!

  28. Poor guy. I can’t believe he went through all of that (and you, too), but I’m so glad it’s resolved.

  29. Wow. I am so glad its better. Its awful to have an abscess. Poor guy, poor you. I would be livid.

  30. that is quite painful but it is better…hope he is ok..
have a safe and memorable Thanksgiving celebration

  31. hope he is doing fine…happy Thanksgiving day!

  32. That smile was PRE surgery right? No kid is that happy to see be in the dentists chair if he knows what’s coming!

Glad it’s over and all worked out. Hope you don’t have spacing problems now due to lack of teeth!

  33. Breaks my heart for you both! The pictures make the whole thing even harder! ((HUGS)) and I am SO glad it’s finally over. Love ya!

  34. #5 is a pretty strong kid! I passed out in the dentist’s chair before getting a wisdom tooth pulled. When I came through the dentist and his assistant were both laughing at me! I couldn’t imagine having to endure several oral surgeries at such a young age. Strong trooper, indeed!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Hugs and Mocha,
    Stesha

  35. aww…
glad he is getting better now 😉
hate that he had to go through all of that!
