Wordful Wednesday-A Newer Obsession

Welcome to Wordful Wednesday……for more information, see “WW” in  my handy dandy tabber box in my right side bar.

I’m being to notice a pattern in my life.

I’m thinking I might be a tad obsessive about some things.

For awhile there it was designer jeans.  I tried on, bought and sold (I’d buy new jeans at Nordstrom Rack and then sell them on ebay or craigslist to support my “habit”) SO many pairs of designer jeans.   Then, I had a much enjoyed affair with handbags. That obsession was a bit short lived however because how many handbags can one have?

I’m sure it’s no surprise that I have a new obsession, and although this one sounds much less expensive, if I don’t reign it in, it could get costly, and I’m NOT being facetious here.

Let me present to you my newest obsession:

Of course it’s in the form of books.  There is a Goodwill BOOKSTORE near my house that I visit multiple times a week.  I can’t help myself.  I find all kinds of  treasures (literally) and if I don’t stop in like daily, I might miss something.  Like a brand new autographed novel by David Ebershoff or an Advanced Readers copy of the latest novel by Marian Keyes or Shilpi Somaya Gowda. How can I resist when the books are $1 or $2 dollars a piece?  Now, I’m sure you are wondering how the “obsession” could be costly, so let me show you some of  my purchases from this past month.

I just. can’t. resist. a good book for a buck.  If I don’t like it, I recycle it.  If I do, I can add it to my library or pass it along to a friend.

Comments

  1. I can’t resist a good book either! We have an office full of them.

  2. What a great find! Think a few of our Goodwill stores have some books, but not a specific “Book” store! What a great way to “overspend!” (Far worse indulgences, that’s for sure. 🙂

    Happy Wordful Wednesday. 🙂

  3. What a great deal!!

  4. Oh wow!!! I would LOVE to go to a bookstore that sold books for a dollar or two. I buy books like crazy – I go to the book store at least once a week. I have to control my urge to buy more than once a week. If I lived near that kind of bookstore I would go everyday too. 🙂

  5. I know what mean about visiting every day… that you might miss out if you don’t! 🙂

  6. Your collection may very well rival that of my brother and sister in law.

  7. Well you are my kind of girl! I’m SO with you on this, Angie. There is a book store near our town called the Almost Perfect Bookstore and, let me tell you, it IS perfect. Wall to wall shelves, stacks, piles of used books. Great deals and great reads. I could get lost in there! 🙂

  8. I say you can never have too many books. Although my SIL just might… 😉

    Such good deals though, right?

  9. I love reading!! 😀 I have been a voracious reader ever since I was little, although sometimes I go through spells where I don’t read for months.

    Thank you for hosting!

  10. Now I KNOW that I need to come hang out poolside with you and READ, READ, READ!

    Blessings!

  11. I also love reading!

  12. Wow. Good thing there’s not a Goodwill bookstore near me, or I would have SO many books lying around! It’s bad enough that I work for the library!

  13. My obsessions include The Hoff, and dresses.

  14. I love used books! Alas, don’t have time to read them… Looks like you finally found an affordable obsession.

  15. Goodwill bookstore?! Wow. That’s dangerous…

  16. I going to thrift shops. I have a ton of books to read that have been sitting for years! Hubby is into buying books too, only new & he is reading, esp historical books. I will trot around to who ever stops by, I am back in another storm, so off I go! Have a fun week!

  17. This is one vice we have in common. I buy books at thrift stores all the time and have a special one near my house that I love. Whats not to love about $1 books?

  18. Wowzers..that is a ton of books. At least this addiction is cheaper than the jeans and handbags!

  19. MommyNamedApril says

i think i read one book in the past year… *sigh* once upon a time i would read at LEAST a book a week.

    one day…

  20. Ooh, I wouldn’t be able to pass them up, either. Books are my weak spot. I love the way they feel and smell, and the feeling of finishing one is priceless. This is a great obsession!

  21. You can’t go wrong for a dollar!

  22. Oh that looks awesome. I, too have a addictive personality. First designer jeans, then hand bags, than make up, I have a problem!! Oh my.

  23. how many handbags can one person have? ummm, a lot. but can i tell you how insanely jealous i am of that bookstore? my own personal heaven, that is.

  24. Wow, that’s a lot of books bought in one month! But I can’t say anything considering I’m almost just as addicted. Me and my kids love to read and we have bookshelves full of books. It’s a nice hobby to have.

  25. Dominique @Dominique's Desk says

I too love reading but just can’t find enough time nowadays. It’s great that you can get books at a buck where you are. Books here are quite costly.

  26. i agree – who can’t resist a good book?! I haven’t been to our library (once a month they have a sale of old used books) in months b/c last time I came home with a couple of bags worth!!!!!

  27. You are so lucky. Maybe when you are done with them you could donate them. Our libary that was flooded in 08 is still taking donations. Haha. Happy WW!

  28. I’m so happy to see that I’m not the only one that can’t resist purchasing a good book for such an amazing price!

    Kim

  29. I love books too, and I’m sure I would do the same thing!

  30. That’s really not a bad obsession to have. I can’t resist stopping by the variety of used books stores we have around here. Sometimes it a great date night, too!

    WW up at my blog.

  31. I think that is a great obsession. My husband goes through books so quickly, I might need to get him to take a look at this as an option for purchasing instead

  32. i share the book obsession. good thing i don’t have a goodwill near me

  33. You have a lot of books there! Maybe you should open an Ebay store! haha!

  34. we are huge fans of the Goodwill bookstore…I rarely buy new books anymore!

  35. I love to read! At least your obsession is with something you can learn from!

  36. Ha! Look at all those books! Could be a worse obsession, like lets say porn movies? Books are good…plus you are showing a good example to your kids!
I am working on getting my WW posted!

  37. I do the same thing with the $1 rack at Books A Million and the 75% off bin. Have any summer reading recommendations?

  38. I’ve been addicted to books myself. Started out as me reading them and then when my kiddos came along I couldn’t resist picking them up one when I had the chance. Out of all the things to have an obsession with, books are not a bad choice!

  39. I am drooling right now… would love to read some of those!

  40. It definitely could get costly in a good way 🙂 I can’t resist the books at my library either that are being sold for a buck!

  41. Oh I MUST know where this store is…pretty please!! You can email me.

  42. Looks like it’s almost time for another book pass!

  43. I really love a good story, but unfortunately for some reason or other reading puts me to sleep. I mean RIGHT NOW! Although, when I’m reading a Stephen King book, which I love I can read those and not fall asleep right away, and mythology. I don’t fall asleep with those either. Have a good day!

  44. I heart books too–I’m the local library to all my friens–you should see my to read pile.its huge

  45. I would love to be locked in a room for a week with all those books.

  46. I could send hours in a book store, especially when good deals can be found!

  47. Wow! That is a lot of books. I wish I had more time for reading. It’s kind of been pushed to the back burner.

  48. Wow! That is a ton of books! Goodwill does have some great book finds though. My husband needed a couple of books for interviewing and how to say things to get what you want to study from for his next promotion and I found the two best books at Goodwill! He loved them and we both loved that we only spent about three bucks.

  49. You could certainly do worse than a book obsession :).

    ———————————–
My photography is available for purchase – visit Around the Island Photography and bring home something beautiful today!

  50. BOOOOKS!! I devour them!
    Marion Keyes is a genius.
Just read another great book by Sarah Strohmeyer, she’s so fun.
    Ahhh…I collect antique books too.
    Book. Are. Fabulous.
    xo

  51. You know I totally get you on this obsession. I have quite a stash of unread books that I’ve picked up over the last few years too that I just couldn’t pass up! Every time I see the drawers that are full of them, I tell myself that someday I will find the time to read all of them! And please let me know which ones you read that you think I will like so I can add them to my list 🙂

  52. So, my question is…..how do you do it?! I have like five books on my kindle right now and I have read each of them…….fragmented pieces and parts….LOL. I aspire to be as well read and commend you for your love of books. I heart books….you give me hope that when my chaos becomes a little less, I’ll have time for them. 😀

  53. I love a good book too! I wish I had enough time in the day to get to read more often.

  54. It’s so hard to say no to something that’s a $1! I’m with you…I have many obsessions myself 🙂

  55. I love, love, love books too and oh how I miss Goodwill stores! When we moved back to Indonesia I was forced to sell some of my books because we just had way too many books to ship LOL.

  56. I love thrift stores and bookstores, so you can imagine how excited I am to hear about this Goodwill bookstore! That is so cool! I wouldn’t be able to control myself if I found a classic for $1 or 2!

Feed your brain while feeding your obsession.

  57. Get a hold of yourself! NOW, before it’s too late!

  58. I am totally obsessive. I’m hooked on reading memoirs right now.
A Goodwill Bookstore??? Be still my heart!

  59. Great! I’m not the only one who loves books…
Unfortunately no time to read them right now
but that’s not the point, right?! 🙂
    Have a good day!

  60. that’s quite the collection angie, but you NEVER can have enough books, can u?

  61. Enjoyed reading your post and the comments above. Glad to know I’m not alone! I, too, have a book habit — books bought and books borrowed (from the library). Our bookshelves are overflowing with books. And I still have a lot to read. Help!

  62. Funny thing. I was just getting dressed yesterday when I was lamenting the fact that I currently have nothing good to read, which then caused me to remember your book exchange project. I was going to remind myself to mention to you that I thought that was AWESOME. So thank you. I loved getting and reading my books so very much and I wish I had books come to my house by mail everyday. Taking The Dudes to the book store is like taking a chicken to the theater. Not okay. Lots of squaking and people always get hurt. So, I’m book-less. Feel free to hook a mommy up if you need to get rid of a few. As a matter of fact, I’ll volunteer to be your official book launderer. You buy them, send them to me, I read them, and send them back. Will make your obsession look WAY less bad b/c then your family will just think you are getting them from me! My boys are turning me into an evil mastermind I think!

  63. My library has bags of books for $2 a lot! You bring a blue bag, stuff it with as many for sale books as you can for an amazing prize. Our home library was huge before, but now that REALLY gets me in trouble. lol
    Happy Wednesday!

  64. I love used books! I love amazons used books especially for those reading lists for summer that my kids bring home!

  65. JDaniel4's Mom says

What great books you found! I would have trouble passing this by too.

  66. I would love a collection of books in English! We fight tooth and nail for the best English books here. You’d be VERY VERY popular!

  67. LOL, we have a Goodwill Bookstore too (and it also carries designer handbags, oddly!). I can think of MUCH worse obsessions than this! (And if you’re not aware, http://www.paperbackswap.com is a great resource for passing on those books when you’re done with them!).

My Wordless is simply a chuckler. Hope it makes someone smile.

  68. I try to use the library as much as I can rather than buying books because once I have read a book I buy and like I can never bear to part with it. We don’t have a good second hand book store nearby, just as well as if I there was and it housed such wonderful finds as you are making I would not be able to stop myself either!

  69. I can’t resist a good book (or ten), either. And that whole buy something then sell it on eBay to support your habit? I’m so there. 😉

  70. Seriously that pile of books is my heaven. I miss buying books and having books to read. I am the green eyed monster right now! Because you have the books AND a goodwill bookstore! How awesome is that! If you feel so inclined to send those books to brazil, I will not object 🙂

  71. I love a good book, but I would never be able to read that many. Maybe when my kids get older.

  72. Someday I will have more time to actually sit and read a good book. For now I end up listening to them on CD while driving.

  73. I share your obsession. I can’t resist a good used book. I’ve got several amazing used book stores around me, and I love to visit them. I always come home with something.

  74. Oooooh… I think I just spotted a Sophie Kinsella book that I have not yet read. Going to have to go to the library. (But only because I don’t have a Goodwill BOOKSTORE! in town. If I did…)

  75. I am obsessed with goodwill in general!

  76. You can never have too many books. I have to buy a new bookshelf about every 3 months… 😉

  77. One of the best Simple Pleasures – spending time with a good book!
    Susan

  78. Happy Wednesday!

  79. I think I found someone with the same problem I have. We should start a support group!

I have a review site for books called Mommy Literati! Stop in sometime!
I just started a week-long series on Twilight.

    http://www.mommyliterati.blogspot.com

  80. That is perfectly lovely obsession to have. I’m trying to get caught up on my reading as it’s fallen by the wayside in lieu of other activitities. But, hey that’s what summer is for right?

  81. That is perfectly lovely obsession to have. I’m trying to get caught up on my reading as it’s fallen by the wayside in lieu of other activitities. But, hey that’s what summer is for right?

    Happy WW!

  82. Oh I would so be in heaven! But I would seriously get myself in trouble in their was something like that around me! Good luck! 🙂

  83. *if* *there*

  84. We’re book fanatics at this house too. We regularly visit library book sales and used book stores…plus B&N and Borders. So many books…so little time! We need a bigger house to support our habit.
    Enjoy 🙂

  85. wow…. i’m not much of a reader, so i applaud you.

  86. so happy that I could participate this week!!!

  87. Wow, so many books…I’m lucky if I get to read 2 or 3 a month. Would take me forever to get through your pile.

  88. I have the perfect solution – sale the ones that you don’t like for a $1 at a yard sale…LOL – I so get this obsession – I had it to for a while only I was getting my stash from Walmart – not quite a $1 – I have sense really gotten into visiting my library. Have a great week!

  89. Our house is like a library! We have thousands of books. It’s so crazy!

  90. Thank goodness there isn’t a Goodwill BOOKSTORE by my house! I fear my stack would be double what yours is.

I love love love to read…… Keep your eye out for Jean Kwok’s Girl In Translation… I just finished writing a review for this yesterday for a book club I belong to. It’s fab!

  91. Susie's Homemade says

Hey, that’s a good obcession to have!

  92. You can never have too many books! 🙂

  93. I am an absolute total book junkie – we share an obsession.

  94. oh my… I would be at the goodwill bookstore every day if we had one here… that is awesome. I loved sophie kinsella’s 20’s girl (my eyes focused on that one in your pile!)

  95. Well that’s just a wonderful obsession!! I used to have a library expansive enough to fill a room…and then my books were put into storage in my MILs basement…so many books lost to mold after a flooding basement :(.

  96. I have the same obsession! My husband “suggested” I limit my stops at the GoodWill because I can’t help myself. “Because it was a dollar!”

  97. Reading is a good obsession though!!

  98. I’m the same way – I just can’t pass up bargain books!

  99. you never know what kind of great books you can find at thrift stores. it can totally be addicting! 🙂

  100. I did NOT need to know about another way to acquire books. I am like a crazy person with bringing books in the house…

This is my first time to link to Wordful.

  101. Wow you do love books! I should read more. Of course I don’t want it to cost me a lot of money haha! I need to get on the ball to link up with you good grief you must be famous or something haha!

  102. Laurie Johnson says

A healthy obsession, in my opinion! One can never have too many books:)
I am the same way, borders is deadly to our checkbook. Maybe it is a good thing I have 5 kids..I don’t venture in too often.:)

  103. Laurie Johnson says

Clarification….I meant “that is one of the good things about having 5 kids:)”
I am so happy they are mine:)

  104. I’m so jealous you have a Goodwill bookstore. I loooove Goodwill! Even if it is a costly habit, I think it’s great for kids to grow up with books everywhere.

  105. I love scanning the old books in the antiques malls. You can really find some treasures there. 🙂

  106. a Goodwill bookstore? no way! That is brilliant. I think we need one of those, for sure! I am weird about my books. If I love one enough to buy it, I can never get rid of it. I become really possessive of my book collection. This would allow me to expand without guilt!!!!

  107. I’m a bookaholic I had never thought to go to Goodwill for books…what a great idea!

  108. Hi Angie 🙂
First, about your comment on how many hand bags can a girl really use? Ummm, my MIL owns like 40. And yes, she uses them all. This one for this type of occasion, and this one for this outfit, and that one for … just watching her transfer all of her ‘must carries’ makes me tired! ;-p
And I have a girl friend whom at least use to have her closet arranged so that every pair of shoes was put away with it’s matching hand bag, AND a baggie with the matching jewlery inside of it … but then again, that was in the 80’s … LOL!!! I’ll have to ask her how many she has now-a-days ;-p

Secondly, about your current obsession with books. What can I say, I too am addicted to them. Or at least I was before this vertigo hit back on Jan. 12th. Now-a-days when I try to read like that, the letters start dancing, and spinning … 🙁 !! Oh but would I ever enjoy a good book right now!
And like you said, how can you leave such good books sitting there at those type of prices? ‘Twould just be wrong!!!
I use to say that I was sacraficing and reading in front of my boys in order to set a good example for them o;-p That was my story and I stuck to it!!!! Your welcome to use it as well 😉

  109. OMG the idea of a Goodwill Bookstore makes me break out into a sweat. My goodwill has two full isles (both sides) of books and that place is already like my mecca. An entire store!?!? Be still my heart!

  110. My house used to be overrun with books from Goodwill, some of which I never got around to reading. Now I have over 200 unread books – on my Kindle! I’m going to bug you again to get one. Tons of free and very inexpensive books. No more tottering piles. The price just went down to $189.

  111. i would go just as crazy…i am a book lover!

  112. Holy crap! LOL I LOOOOVVVVEEEEE books too but I haven’t gotten into thrift shopping for them. Usually I’ll get on half.com or Amazon and get the books there for a buck or two. But then I have to pay shipping, which isn’t a lot but it adds up too. Right now, I’ve got a pile of books in my closet (since hubby took them out of our desk armoir) and a stack on my table. I don’t read fast enough though. But I definitely GET the obsession!! Right up my alley!! =)

  113. Danger Will Robinson! Danger! Danger! Danger!
You have no idea what kind of trouble you’re into now! :0)
I started with just a few books, now I have no more room on my shelves for anymore.
    Next step, the Kindle!

  114. Wow, that is quite the collection. I sure wish I had time to read that much. Have a wonderful Wednesday. Thanks for stopping by the Healthy Moms!

  115. Wow- I’m impressed! We hit the local library a lot but I never thought of Goodwill!

  116. I LOVE books of all kinds. They are the first thing I head for when I get to garage sales and second hand stores.

  117. You can NEVER have too many books. I dream of someday having a room where one wall, floor to ceiling, in nothing but bookshelves and filled with books.

  118. oh wow-the Good Will bookstore sounds wonderful! Have fun reading!

  119. There is nothing like a good book. There is also nothing like expecting a book to be good and then it turns out to be a dud. What a waste of time! But it was worth trying. I love books too…not a super fast reader, but love them still the same!

  120. That bookstore sounds amazing! If I could get great books for so little I’d be hoarding them myself! Happy WW!

    Dawn

  121. I guess there could be so many WORSE (and unhealthy things) to be obsessed with! Good books are always a great find, though!

  122. I so wish I lived nearer to you. We could have quite a good swap going. I could retaliate to this post with a picture of the walls of my office. It would make you feel better. But I love books so much that being surrounded by them soothes me. So many words, so many stories – how can your latest addiction be anything bad???

  123. I have amassed quite a few over the years and now when we move, we have boxes and boxes of books. I love the smell of them and having an entire room covered in them is a dream. So jealous of your $1 collection!

  124. With the prices being so low at a place like that I think it’s a pretty safe obsession as far at those go! Plus you got some pretty good titles in there, first rate and not just bargain bin.

PS: I have to disgree, you can NEVER have too many handbags.

  125. I have the same obsession!!! I just can’t resist buying books. Just when I clean off the shelves and get rid of some, I find some hard to resist bargain and fill the shelves back up again!

  126. Oh that is a great to love books.. I am the same way.. Enjoy reading..

  127. Oh, that’s fantastic! I loved the picture of your new stash. Anson and Levi are with me reading your blog, when we got down to the photo of all the books Levi exclaimed,” she’s a bookworm!”, it was cute the way he said it in admiration. Fun days of reading while the children splash away.

  128. Finally … an obsession we share!

  129. You weren’t kidding when you said book devouring!

  130. Just stopped in at the bargain bookstore around the corner tonight. (Though I don’t have much reading time these days with the triplets taking the world by storm.) Tonight I paid a couple bucks for the first two Little House on the Prairie books to start reading chapter by chapter to my four-year-old daughter. Yay!

    Christy

    • I’m reading The Little House on the Prairie to my 4 year old daughter, and she loves it!

We’re also working on Stuart Little.

  131. You have never have or read too many books! They are the stuff of life.. well, almost! 😉

  132. it seems that Mr. Linky is down! wow amazed by your book collections..

  133. So, I want to know when you have time to read all of those??

Are you reselling them, or putting them on PaperBack Swap?

You know how I love the Goodwill!

  134. hi..just linked myself..i enjoyed reading your posts..nice to be here..grabbed your button..=)
