Top Ten Mommy List

Before I became a mommy, I would have appreciated someone telling me:

1. That kids don’t just go to sleep when you want them to.
2. That kids are always, and I mean always hungry.
3. That when kids are potty trained, you still have to wipe their butts for a LONG time.
4. That kids talk back.
5. That you’ll probably never sleep in again.
6. That the amount of puke you’ll end up cleaning up will most likely surprise you. And not in a good way.
7. That no diaper is leak proof.
8. That once you’ve given birth everyone else that has also given birth wants to swap birth stories.
9. That you’ll be doing a lot, and I mean a lot of pampering. And not to yourself.
10. That time flies. Almost literally.

I was told that the amount of love I will feel for my child will amaze me.

They were right.

  1. Great list, and I am having trouble with number 1 RIGHT NOW!!!!!

  2. Great list! I wasn’t prepared for anything when I became a mom. It was all new to me!

  3. I never knew kids puked so much, this is the second list I saw so far that’s mentioned it–and that’s 2 for 2!

Visiting from Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop. I did the freaking out prompt.

  4. Couldn’t agree anymore with #2!
BTW…you have a really great blog, here!

    famous last words, right?

  8. You are so right about the wiping butts part ๐Ÿ˜‰ I was just thinking that exact thought yesterday!!

    • That’s one milestone I will not lament in the least. I feel like all I’ve been doing for the past decade is that! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. That list would have been nice to have in the beginning:-)

  10. isn’t it the truth? especially #10. sigh.

  11. Great list but you know I think I’d heard all that before my little guy was born and I still jumped in! You never quite believe it until it happens to you. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. I find # 7 to be one of the most obnoxious…

  13. I am still laughing about #3. It’s so true! And so gross. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Love the list… and sooo true!

  15. Grace's Mom says

I have been SO blessed with Grace! She does go to bed when I put her to bed (Babywise!) and she doesn’t back-talk…yet. I truly believe that she is a very easy child to parent…I also truly believe that I will pay for it with my next child. ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. I can so relate with #2 right now, my son is forever hungry & he is standing next to me demanding food at the moment…

  17. Love this post, especially the one, “No diaper is leak-proof! ”

    So true!

  18. I would have liked somebody to warn me that no matter how mature and logical you try to be, it’s still going to hurt your feelings, the day your kids go from thinking you know everything to thinking you don’t know anything.

I would also have liked a little warning that kids will remember EVERYTHING you say and a 3 year old won’t hesitate to repeat it at top volume, on a crowded bus, at rush hour; even if it includes words like vulva.

  19. I may be having one of my brain fart moments here, but I seriously thought I left a comment when I stopped by your blog earlier. Maybe I really am going crazy! Anyhow, I loved your list. You had a couple of things listed that I hadn’t even thought about. Great job.
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I absolutely love visiting yours. (So glad I’m receiving email updates on your new blog posts.)

  20. Amen sister!

  21. Great list! I couldnt agree more with the time flying, and the amount of Love that just comes…and to think, I was HONESTLY worried that I wouldn’t be able to love my second as much as my first!

  22. I have to say I agree with it all. though I’d LOVE to stop wiping my son’s butt. I’ve been trying to get him to do it himself but when he does….it ain’t pretty

  23. I’m just beginning to realize #2. #3 is depressing. #7,8, and 10 are SO true!

    Thanks for stopping by! ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Number 3 – Grrr. So so true. Someone should have prepared me for that one. I had no idea. So many butts to wipe. Great list, Angie!

  25. #2- my boys are determined to eat us out of house and home…and the oldest is only 5. They are bottomless pits.

  26. Yes, I am still wiping butts… will be so glad when I don’t have to do that anymore.. oh but wait, I am pregnant, I am going to be doing a ton of that again soon. Darn.. oh well, someday right?

    Great list!

  27. Feeling # 2 and # 5 on a daily basis in this neck of the woods.

  28. Very good list! I’d add to it…that you would be surprised at what you and your husband would actually have as dinner conversation once you had a baby!

  29. lmbo seriously we needa before you have a kid things you need to know handbook. But then again if we knew all that would we still have the kids lol.

  30. Your list is so on point!! lol

  31. Make sure your kids read this post before they have kids…so they can’t ever say they hadn’t been warned. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  32. that I will put my self behind my children, no matter what…

  33. The day I was no longer wiping a kids butt was a good day in my mommy book.

  34. Seriously, children will NOT sleep when you want them too. This needs to be brocast every where!

  35. Oh how true – but isn’t it so worth it?

I used to love sleeping in – for the 6 years of married life before kids we used to lounge in bed during the weekends. Now I cannot even remember what that was like but if someone had told me how wonderful parenthood was I probably could not have waited the 6 years!

  36. Wait, puke and wiping butts? I’m never having a child.

  37. What a great list!
Yeah, speaking of sleep. I am finding myself extremely exhausted right now.

    Thanks for stopping by :O)

  38. My mom is a deity in my opinion … my goodness she had to go through a lot in parenting me … I definitely don’t envy her, that’s for sure!

  39. Great list, I did this one too!

And #1? Yeah… we’re teething right now and Babes likes to wake up 2 hours after we put her down. What’s that about?

And the time flies one makes me sad a little… I already miss Babes all squishy and little.

  40. so true

  41. can I just steal this one? because this should just be published and given out to all pregnant mommies!

It is all SOO true. Abby has been potty trained since 201/2 mths old and she just turned 4 a couple weeks ago and she still yells from the toilet “mommy I pooped” I just want to say good for you now do something about it yourself!

and can I tell you about vomit OMG please tell me I am not the only one whose kid can cough and gag himself into a vomiting fit.

  42. #8 cracked me up, and I was so jealous I didn’t have a “birth story” other than the fact of “he was huge, they didn’t want to chance labor, so they cut him out, he cried, I cried, they sewed me back up” end of birth story! =)

  43. Great list! I did a list as well ๐Ÿ™‚

I have to say, the one that caught my attention on yours… the birth stories. How right and too funny! No one tells you anything until you “join the club” and then suddenly you get every single detail from every mama you know. LOL

  44. ooh good ones– the sleep thing is still something I was never prepared for!

  45. Great list! I love seeing the different things everyone has come up with for their top 10. You had a great point about them eating EVERYTHING in sight. I always tell me daughter that she has a hollow wooden leg.

I can remember my school years creaping by but it seems like it was just yesterday that I gave birth to my oldest daughter.

  46. how about that if epidural were a street drug, I’d be a junkie! There is nothing ‘natural’ about natural childbirth. It’s just icky an owie!

  47. So very very true.

And that you develop a mommy instinct. I thought as a parent you get that, nope just mommies get it.

  48. Great list. I will send all my kid-less friends over to read it!

  49. I agree with all of these!!! And I would go so far as to say that the more you NEED and WANT them to go to sleep, the less chance they will go to sleep.

  50. LOVE IT! And SO true.

It was an early morning on July 28th & we were on our way to the hospital…. JUST KIDDING! ๐Ÿ™‚

  51. #3 is killing me. When does it end with boys???
