The Embarrassment Never Ends

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week in these parts.

I truly appreciate my childrens’ teachers and wanted to do something special for them as a token of my gratitude.

I got them gift cards, flowers and made them cookies.

I was feeling pretty pleased with the presentation until I actually “presented” the gifts to the teachers and office staff with my children.

As the secretary was thanking us for the goodies, John said VERY LOUDLY and VERY CLEARLY,

“We bought them at the 99 cent store”.

Now, in his mind, this is the ultimate compliment since he loves the 99 cent store.

I don’t think adults think of it in quite the same way.

I was totally embarrassed.

And for the record?  I did not buy the gifts at the 99 cent store.  We just happened to have been there earlier that day.

Since I homeschool, I asked the kids to give me a washer and dryer. Apparently, they didn’t find those at the 99 cent store. Darn. Guess we’ll have to go buy them in the thousand dollar store.

  23. It sucks so much that you actually didn’t buy them there – oh children.

  24. I am a teacher, and I can honestly say, that it doesn’t matter if you get something from the 99cent store. I always just feel great that my students care about me enough to actually want to get me something.
So be proud! You’re a parent who cares and did something nice.

I totally get the embarassment though. Yesterday at Burger King my son said, (really loudly) “Wow, that fat guy behind the counter is nice.” He meant it as a compliment, the register guy? Not so much.

  28. Awesome! They either thought you were cheap, resourceful, or frugal. Tough economic times?!?

Regardless, they should be thinking, “It’s the thought that counts, not how or where it was purchased.” I think it is very kind of you to do something in appreciation.

  29. LOL, sounds like something my son would do. He loves to share things that he shouldn’t.

  32. Eek! Out of the mouths of babes… What did you say!?

I used to be a preschool teacher, and it honestly wasn’t about the gifts for me (although I was baffled the time I received a pair of slipper socks and a half-burned candle in a crumbled gift bag!) The recognition and a “thank you” meant the world to me. The best gift I ever received was when a parent wrote a letter to my boss, praising me, and requested that I got a copy and a copy was added to my personal file. That gift went on to get me a pretty decent raise at my next performance review, and I still have my copy of that letter to this day!

  42. LOL, that’s a great story! (well, maybe not for you…) 😉

  43. Haaaaaaaahh!!! Oh, lovely……..thank you again Angie for a good laugh, and so sorry for the embarrassment. Any mom can relate.

What a fantastic gesture to give gifts to the teachers and staff, I bet they loved it. I am sure they felt special and appreciated. A huge “mom success” to get something like that together and delivered, awesome! (at least for me it is)

Yesterday I was in tears from the kids behavior in the dr.s waiting room, truly embarrassing….

you’ve been busy making cookies lately 🙂 mother’s day weekend was the first in a long time and i’m guessing it will be a while before i hunker down and make some more.

    You’re awesome! 🙂
