Can you believe Teacher Appreciation week is here? I ADORE trying to come up with clever, fun and inexpensive ways to tell my kids teachers that they are appreciated, valued and not taken for granted. This year I wanted to let my kids’ teachers know that they are “golden”. So, for teacher appreciation week I decided that a gold hand stamped polka dot tote bag would do the trick. The nice thing about this idea is that you can customize it with any pattern or color and this technique can be used on any type of fabric. I’ve even made a free printable for you to attach to the tote, “You are TOTE-ally golden”!
Materials Needed
- Canvas Tote Bag
- Fabric Medium
- Metallic Craft Paint
- Round Sponge Dauber
Instructions for Making a Gold Polka Dot Tote
- Mix 2 parts metallic craft paint with 1 part fabric medium.
- Dip round sponge into paint and remove excess paint by dabbing on paper plate.
- Begin at the top of the tote bag. I went from left to right using two fingers width. Stagger your polka dots. I usually stick with a triangle pattern. If you have a template then it will make it much easier on you.
- Tip: Add a sheet of parchment paper in between the tote bag so that the paint doesn’t bleed through to the other side. This will end up being a two part process because you have to wait for one side of the bag to dry before painting the other side.
- Download, print, trim and attach the free tag.

I’d recommend printing on white card stock. Then cut out and use on teacher appreciation gift!
And that’s how I made an easy peasy Teacher Appreciation Polka Dot Tote that’s the perfect gift for Mother’s Day and Teacher Appreciation Day!
