Wordful Wednesday – Visiting Tulum, Mexico

Wordful Wednesday 411: Wordful Wednesday is like Wordless Wednesday, except WITH words.  It’s for those of us that just cannot be wordless, no matter how much we try.  Add my Wordful Wednesday badge to your post (right side bar under “WW”) if you really want to make me happy, and then add your post link to the linky below. Easy peasy.

We went International last week and took the kids to Cancun for a week.  It was so nice to get away.  We truly “unplugged” and didn’t use our phones which means no phone, no texting and no internet.  I think it was the first time I’ve gone without internet access for more than a whole day in like a decade.  For real.

One of my favorite parts of our trip was our trip to Tulum.  The last time we visited Cancun, Jeff and I visited Chichen Itza, and although we thought the ruins there were pretty darn spectacular we wanted to take the kids to Mayan ruins that were a little closer to the hotel and that were on a little smaller scale.  Plus, we heard that their setting overlooking the ocean was breath taking.

It was.

One of the things that I loved about the ruins at Tulum was that it was really easy to tell whether the buildings were designed to be temples (the temples have stone roofs) or palaces, and when it got almost too hot to bear, you could walk down to the beach and cool off in the ocean.

Their iguana selection was superb, too.  :)  At one point we counted 11 iguanas in a 10′x10′ area!

Even though it was really hot, the kids were excellent sports and hardly complained at all.  Especially when I told them (the boys) that the Mayan kids used to be kept in dungeons guarded over by trained iguanas when they were naughty.  For some reason they felt grateful that wasn’t their fate or something.  {laughing}

It’s truly amazing that these structures are still in such great shape, don’t you think?  Especially when you consider the ruins are right on the coast and the salt and sea breeze are continuously “weathering” the rock.

My favorite “venue” at the ruins was this little area right on the backside of the ruins over looking the ocean.  I could have stayed there all day.  There was this amazing coastal breeze, the blue of the Caribbean was gorgeous, and having my family around me just made me, HAPPY.
