{Kids Change Everything}-Guest Post

I’d like to welcome Chrissy, mastermind behind Life as a CEO who lives life as a “wife, mother, blogger and everything in between”.  Sge wrote one of the most beautifully honest posts here.

They say “having a baby changes everything.”  But, I think it’s more like “having-a-child-old-enough-to-participate-in-extra- curricular-activities changes everything.”

I was so excited to write that $200 check to sign my son, Buckaroo, up for his first season of T-ball that I never thought to ask about what sort of commitment I was getting our family into.  How much of a commitment could it even be?  After all, it’s just 5-year olds playing T-ball.  I figured they would meet one afternoon each weekend for a 30 minute practice followed by a short game.  I could surely set aside an hour each weekend to introduce him to organized sports.

Shortly after getting the call that he was placed on a team within our local Little League, I received our schedule–“Our” schedule because my required parental volunteer times were on there, as well as the dates I needed to be water/dug-out mom!  The rest of the schedule came as even more of a shock to me:

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through mid June–Two days will be games, and the third will be a practice.

Opening day—arrive at the field promptly at 8am to prep for the parade, which follows at 9am, followed by a game, followed by Family Fun Day.

Comedy Show Fundraiser Night – mid April.

AAA Baseball Game Fundraiser Night – mid May.

Seriously?  What happens when my daughter is old enough to play sports?  Will my husband and I ever see each other again?

*And don’t forget that a little comment love goes a long way in winning a few of my favorite things!

  7. I have heard this – my kids are still tiny but friends that have older children in sports tell me they are unbelievably busy. We’ll be there soon enough so I guess I should enjoy these “calm” times.

  8. Wow, that’s a lot for a 5 year old. I guess you can kiss goodbye any free time until it’s over. Well, at least you get to be outside.

  9. $200 WTH that is expensive and I was complaining about the $55 and $60 I had to pay for my kids

and the answer is NO when you have two kids playing your life will revolve around the ballfield. Trust me on this I know from experience. Mon practice, tuesday practice, wednesday home (woohoo), thursday game, friday game, saturday 2 games!! 8am and 2 pm

  12. I hear you! My husband and I were on the fence about having a fourth child….until my oldest played soccer two years ago. It’s hard dragging the other kids along to “watch” and the entire family’s weekend has to be worked around children’s activities. I have a strict rule as the parent of three kiddos. Only one activity per kid at a time. It’s all I can handle.

  13. And it only gets worse as they get older and it actually gets competitive! I juggle one in baseball and one in travel soccer (where I’m team mom) and it is never ending. We are ALWAYS on a field somewhere! When my husband tried talking my daughter into a sport I nearly killed him.

  14. You’re not kidding me!! Having older kids really does change everything! Sports teams are not easy–very time consuming, but fun nonetheless.

  15. It’s a total commitment! So far, I’ve dodged the organized sports bullet and we still enjoy t-ball and softball season as spectators. My girls are 4 though…I’m sure my days are numbered 🙂

  16. Good gracious! Do they actually have time to play ball between the comedy shows and the parades??

  17. This is so funny. This year we were on the cusp of signing up our girls for soccer, they were old enough but we were ready to give up every weekend for 10 weeks. LOL we decided we have the next 15 or so years to sit in the bleachers and this year we are gonna live it up relaxing on Saturday mornings and 2 days during the week 🙂

  18. See! I tell my husband it’s not worth it. We have a big yard. Let them run around outside. Set up a neighborhood team to make it seem “real”. If they need an audience, we voluntarily kick our legs up and watch. No money lost. And we’re spending time bonding as a couple.

    Hugs and Mocha,
