How to Make Homemade Oatmeal Soap

Homemade soap is easy to make, relatively inexpensive, and a fabulous homemade gift.  I decided to make an almond scented-oatmeal-goats-milk soap because it’s a soap with moisturizing and exfoliating properties and it smells delicious and looks beautiful.  It’s the perfect soap!  Plus, now that I’ve made just about every scent of sugar scrubs I could think of I had to move on to something else, right?

DIY Homemade Oatmeal Soap

Homemade Oatmeal Soap

Homemade Oatmeal soap is a great choice to make because it:

  • Smells great – you can choose how mild or strong you want the scent depending upon the amount of scent you add to your mixture!
  • Moisturizes
  • Gently Exfoliates
  • Cleans
  • Is Easy to Make
  • Looks Lovely
  • Is a Fabulous Homemade Gift

  • Place 8 cubes of Goat’s Milk Soap Suspension Formula in microwave safe bowl and melt in microwave approximately 1-1/2 minutes on high.  (I used a 40% off coupon at Michael’s so I paid $6.00 for the pack)  Tip: It melts evenly if you use a knife to cut the individual cubes instead of leaving it in a block.
  • Add approximately 40 drops of sweet almond oil soap extract  (I purchased at Michaels for $2.99).  This is about a 6:1 ratio.  5 drops of oil for 1 cube of soap.  If you like a stronger scent, I’d use more drops of oil.
  • Add 1/4 cup oatmeal that has been lightly blended in blender to make grains smaller.
  • Mix ingredients in microwave safe bowl and pour into soap molds (I got mine at Michaels for $1.99).  This recipe fills two square molds and makes 2 nice sized bars of soap.

Decorate Soap

I used bakers twine and paper flowers to decorate my bars of soap.  They look really cute wrapped in parchment paper too.  I figured out that each bar of soap costs about $1.25 – $1.50 to make.

I LOVE how they turned out! I think they would make fantastic “meet the teacher” gifts too! My kids go back to school the beginning of August. I think I’ll add this to my list!

    • I think they’d be great meet the teacher gifts too. In fact, I think that’s what I’ll do this year. You know where to come to make the soap. Thanks so much for helping me make the soap! You ROCK! 🙂

  2. Idea: what about making little ones by using those shaped ice cube trays to mold the soap? We have heart shaped ones and dolphins we got cheap at the supermarket.

    • That would totally work, and they would be easy to pop out of the mold. Additionally, they would “set” faster in the freezer! Score! Just don’t forget they are in there or you might ruin your batch.

      • Jacqueline Gaster says

how long does the oatmeal soap need to cure? Do you just leave it out in a cold place to cure? how long does the soap last before going bad? How long can you keep it in the fridge? How and what is the best way to extend the life of the soap? Sorry for all the questions but I would like to make some soap that would last a while rather than making it as I go. Thank you!

  3. My daughter and I, well mostly her, made sugar scrubs last wk for birthday gifts. We made coffee, vanilla brown sugar, grapefruit, lemon and vanilla pepperment. The coffee one, we used half brewed and half fresh cofffee grounds. it was a little oily, added more sugar. all in all, it was fun, we like to stamp, so stamped some pretty labels.

  4. Now we are gonna have to try the soap! lol

  5. This looks fantastic! How long does it take for the soap to set and harden in the mold?

  6. Sounds great. Do you think that it would be a good product for someone with sensitive skin?

    • Pre-made soap base like this is not usually very good for sensitive skin. It generally has alcohol and/or propolene glycol and other chemicals added to it. Better to find a truly handmade-from-scratch soap. If you have sensitive or problem skin, handmade natural soap will provide amazing results! I make soap myself, but am not trying to advertise my soap, specifically. Nearly any handmade soap will be a welcome relief from the chemical “soap” found in commercial products.

  7. What’s the best way to take the soap out of the mold? I cut mine but there has to be an easier way!

  8. Wow! This is fabulous! Great idea for the holiday goodie baskets i make up for family and friends. I’d like to try some of those sugar scrubs too! Great idea!

  9. These would make great gift items. Thanks for sharing! Pinning!

  10. Simple, but very natural I love it! Going to save up those 40% to get started on this project. Thanks!

  11. I made this soap this past weekend. I also added about 15 drops of aloe Vera oil. It was fabulous! So I made another batch for my girlfriends at work. Everyone loved them today. The soap felt like silk when I used it. Everyone raved and ranted over their bars. I felt a little guilty bc it was such an easy recipe. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to make your scrubs.

  12. Angie,
I just made your Oatmeal Soap recipe to give as a gift to a new neighbor, I love it! The detailed product information you listed made it a one stop shopping to gather the necessary ingredients. I plan to make more to give as Christmas & hostess gifts. Do you have any other recipes using other ingredients? I am going to emboss the next batch I make using the website listed on the Goat Milk soap package. I also plan to make your sugar scrubs. Thank you again!

  13. May i which website to purchase all those DIY soap ingredients?

  14. Hi, I just want to know what time will be ok to mix all the ingredients in microwave? And after pour into soap molds where I have to let them dry?

    Thanks,
    Mabel

  15. Your recipe was so helpful! i needed to do it for a school project and I did really well. The only thing that I was a little confused about was what to do with it after but then I looked on a different website and it said just leave it to dry so that was good. I just wanted to say Thanks SOOO much!

  16. how do you keep the oatmeal from sinking to the bottom?
    thank you

  17. Thank you for this! I have wanted to try my hand at making soap but didn’t want to get involved with lye. 🙁 I had no idea there was such a thing as suspension formula! Can’t wait to try it! 🙂

  18. naturegirl says

ok sounds great because no lye, but with an ingredients list like this: Ingredients Goat’s Milk Powder, Glycerin, Prop. Glycol, Coconut Oil, Triethanolamine, Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Myristate, Sodium Laurate, Sodium Stearate, Titanium Dioxide, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Purified Water, DMDM Hydantoin in the goat milk soap base, sorry but no thanks. yuck!

    • You can buy other melt and pour bases that are more natural. All of them contain lye though…

I searched online, and found one that I really like. I always look at the ingredients, and make sure that I am using only the best. If you need the link to where I have found mine you can e-mail me. knikolnolan@gmail.com

    • All soap is made with lye, just like all water is made with hydrogen. If you want a natural soap, you need to make it from scratch, it’s not that hard.

      • Kat, is there a recipe around for a natural based soap that you can recommend , everything i’m finding either has chemicals or caustic stuff in them

  19. Also it doesn’t smell like almond at all ?

  20. Have extra game print outs in case your guests
want more of these games. First and the most important thing is to have an idea about the water slide set up from the party rental companies and it should have proper drainage system in your lawn that will
allow the water to run smoothly. For those wanting to shop for playground instrumentation, certify
you have got a transparent understanding of what’s your precise
    demand.

  21. Hi there! Was wondering what the next step was after pouring into the molds (form the recipe above for the oatmeal soap with sweet almond oil)……….. This will be my first attempt at making soap & I want to make sure I follow all the steps form beginning to end! Thank you so much!! Danielle 🙂

    • Hi Danielle,
After pouring in the molds, you just need to let cool and then pop out of the molds. It cools quite quickly and I took mine out of the molds sort of like taking ice out of an ice tray.

    • I used to looove this preotcjs. I wish I could remember them and tell you, but it’s been sooo long! Mmm thinking, thinking .mmm ..not sure ice is a good idea..if your project could be put on exivition, the ice would melt, wouldn’t work for showing your project, unless it’s a different kind of project that you can record on a video and show that or show one time in class only, then ice can work. If you go on youtube you can find many science experiments easy to do at home and you can get ideas there. I’m tping from cell otherwise I would have check for you some ideas .thinking, thinking .mmm .i remember I did one growing flowers with different water color and the same white flowers grew to be with different color petals according to the color of the water, they were called flor vicaria they grow anywhere in warm weather. Oh I was looking last nigt at a video about magnetic levitation search youtube. Maybe you an ask your teacher and get the ingridients and do a hell of a show with that. Good luck.

  22. Sounds easy enough! Thank you so much!

  23. Love handmade soap, especially oatmeal/lavender! One of my favorite.
I hope one day I will be able to find everything I need to make some here in Ecuador…for now I found a local artisan who make some!
    Thank you for sharing…

  24. Hello!
I’d like to use a cookie cutter, (metal I am assuming) as my bride is having a Tulip themed wedding and I’d like to give out Tulip Soap as the favor! Is this possible?? How long does it need to sit in the mold/cutter??

I have read other “recipes” and it says 3-5 hours?! I have both a kitchen aid & hand mixer will either one work or is one better than the other??

Lastly, I need to make at least 50, tell me I am not taking on too much and that it can be done! 😉 The reviews have been positive, though older, still fingers crossed!! 🙂 Please email me!

    Thanks
    Ashley

    • To use cookie cutters with melt and pour soaps, which is what this is, after you make it lightly spray a rimmed cookie sheet and pour in soap. Let it sit until you can cut with a knife a little on one end and it is still a little soft. If it is too firm you cannot cut it out. If it is still squishy wet, for lack of a better term, it won’t work either. Start cutting out like you would cookies or biscuits. Cut out what you can and remember to cut as close as you can, but you leave them in until cooled. If they get too hard to neatly cut out just cut into 1″ squares or smaller and re-melt on 25 second bursts, take out and stir after each time, the lumps will melt while you stir. After a few bursts at the end, when most is melted stir out the lumps until it is thin again. Watch and don’t get it boiling. You can reuse the bits from cut out soaps just re-melt and pour in smaller pan to cut out. If you have rough edges, just rub them smooth with your fingertips. I have used cookie cutters A LOT to add character to my soaps and it is doable. 50 is not impossible. You would do better to make more than one batch so you won’t have to do a lot of re-melting. Have fun, I promise, it is REALLY easier than it sounds! Pour the soap to about 3/4 to 1″ so your cutters will go through smoothly, depending on you shape. Sorry for the book, I hope you got your answer and still have time to do them. Judy

  25. 5 drops to 1 cube of soap does not equal 6:1 ratio. Do look up the word ratio and stop misusing it. Hopefully you haven’t used it in a formula that has the potential to be dangerous.

  26. Can I use flavored oatmeal for the soaps?

  27. What about the drying phase? Is it not needed in this recipe? Thanks for your response

    • I would dry them overnight…as with most all soaps!

I like to keep mine on the counter, not in the fridge too.

  28. A fascinating discussion is definitely worth comment. I do think that you need to publish more
on this subject, it might not be a taboo subject but generally people don’t speak about these subjects.
    To the next! Best wishes!!

  29. No lists of what i need ………

  30. gracielle says

Hi,may I know the exact name of the Michaels store?

  31. gracielle says

I mean what is the word to type to search it online? Thanks:)

  32. can’t wait to try it

  33. To keep this piece brief I’ll focus on full synthetic oil, API Group V, as opposed to semi synthetic oil.

You may want to spend the extra money to get a truly synthetic motor oil.
So, for instance, if the manufacturer said you could use 10w30 or 10w40 in your vehicle, unless your application falls under one
of the exceptions below, you could safely stick to an Xw30 oil (using the lowest “Y”
value listed) and you could go with a 0w30 or 5w30 oil safely, even though the manufacturer listed only 10w
    options.

  34. Thanks for the linky! I love that soap – so pretty! I love your blog and I found you tuhgroh NFF! I have a design blog too and would love for you to come see what I’ve been designing too!xo – jami

  35. I am playing around with different Christmas gift ideas, and I just made these. The came out amazing!! I used Almond Extract and added about 3 drops per cube pure almond oil. They are setting right now, so I won’t know how they “officially” came out until tomorrow, but they smell and look amazing!

    Thank you!

  36. Rebecca L. says

Does anyone know how much 1 cube of goat’s milk soap weighs, or how many cubes are in each package?

  37. This is the first time making soap out of necessity. When pouring in mold do i need to put anything in the mold to stop from sticking or will it come out easy from the mold?

  38. I just made these! I had never made soap before and they were SUPER easy and fool-proof. You melt, mix, and pour. Thats it! Thanks for this great recipe! I couldn’t get the goats milk soap suspension formula, so I used White Glycerin Soap suspension and it turned out just the same I would imagine. It smells so good! These make great Christmas presents for those people that you want to get a little something for 🙂

  39. Hi, It looks absolutely brill. I can’t wait to try it. But I wanted to ask if any other soap base can be used instead such as olive oil soap or castile soap? Also can this be used on the face? Thanks.

  40. Hi,
How much is 8 blocks? I have the soup in just one bar and been wondering how much it would be in graams
    Thank you

  41. Where do I get the coupon fro Michaels to save on the goat milk because I feel like that’s the only way to make it worth it or else its just to expensive to make the soap. Your a Bundle of sticks
