How to Make Homemade Nail Polish

It’s the end of the summer and my girls are getting bored.  Lucky for me, I came across a homemade nail polish tutorial that gave me the idea to give the girls some supplies and let them make their own custom nail polish.  It’s the PERFECT boredom buster, super inexpensive and perfect for gift giving.  Wouldn’t it be cute for the girls to make an assortment of nail polishes with a sugar scrub to give to their friends for Christmas?

Homemade Nail Polish

One of the things I loved about this “craft” is that I gave them the supplies and let them go to town.  They are 10 and 12 years old and perfectly capable of making their own nail polish without supervision.  Score.  Here’s how:

Supplies Needed:

  • clear nail polish – {I found mine at Target for 94 cents a bottle, regular price}
  • glitter
  • OPTIONAL:  printer paper to make funnel {and scissors to cut it}

How to Make Homemade Nail Polish:

  • Cut piece of printer paper  about 4″x4″.  Roll to make funnel.
  • Get creative and pour glitter into clear nail polish. Use funnel, or don’t.  My girls thought it was harder to use the funnel and preferred not to.
  • Mix together by putting lid back on the bottle and shake, tapping against palm of hand.
  • That’s it.

  1. Now that is a great idea! I bet you can do it with almost any color nail polish too! Just add a bit of sparkle to the plain color!

  2. How fun is that!!!!!!!!!!!! My girls love these sparkly polishes.

  3. OH.MY. GOODNESS. She-Twin is having a sleepover with one special friend for her 11th (gadzooks, how’d that happen?) birthday this weekend, and I think we just found our craft fun! Thank you! 🙂

  4. How fun! I think I’ve got a couple top coat bottles AND tubes of glitter laying around somewhere – will definitely need to try this now!

  5. I’m twelve I’m still kinda confused,and were do I get the supplies from?:-(

    • Samantha, any clear nail polish and glitter will work. They sell clear nail polish at almost any store, and glitter you could even get from the dollar store. Just pour some glitter into the clear nail polish, put the cap back on and shake the bottle to mix in the glitter. 🙂

  6. Hey ladies! Just wanted to let you know that you can also use any eyeshadow! The mineral eyeshadows are faster BUT any shadow will work. Just make sure to get out any clumps by placing the shadow in a plastic baggie a giving it a few (easy) pounds on it to get the clumps out and you are good to go! If you want to add the glitter that is just fine you can do that after mixing up the shadow. But if you want or go for a more (matte or semi matte) look then just add the shadow and shake it up! Get ready to make some amazing colors. Hope that this helps! XO
