Did he really?

Oh yes he did.

He snapped his fingers right next to my ear and said, “HELLO?”

Are you picturing his tone of voice? I am, and the impatience I can still hear in it makes me red-hot-mad.

I can’t remember the last time I was so angry at a stranger.

What I wanted to say was, “Did you seriously just snap your fingers in my ear?”

What I did say was, “I know there is a register open, but they are not ready for me”.

I also said another word that I shall not mention in my head.  My girls were with me.

He saw that I was steaming and he said, “You’re a lucky momma”.

Really?  Hum.  Is that the new greeting for lucky momma’s?  Snapping at them?  When they are paying more attention than you to the line?

Being the reactionary that I am, I glared at him  It didn’t feel as good as it should have.

I wish I could have snapped my fingers on either side of his ears. For like 5 minutes straight.  I really, really wanted to. I’m an ADULT though, so I didn’t.  But that doesn’t mean I didn’t want to.  It might have felt good to kick him, too.

I should have taken his picture.  I wish I would have taken his picture.  Because wouldn’t being able to see a photoshopped picture of him make this post all the better?

My question to you is:  {Is it ever appropriate when-standing-behind-someone-in-line to snap your fingers in their ear to get their attention?}

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say no.

Why oh why are people so rude? It amazes me. As moms we teach our kids to be polite. Where does it all go wrong? This man had a mom.

    Melissa, Multi-Tasking Mama says

What a….well, I better keep that word in my head too. Good for you for taking the high road!

    S Club Mama says

how annoying. and rude. ugh.what did he mean by you were a lucky momma? what?

what are all the icons under your "share this" thing? I'm so technologically behind. LOL

    WhisperingWriter says

Woah, that was rude of that guy.

Had I been alone, I'd have been tempted to smack him over the head with my purse.

But like you, I'd have probably been wth my kids so I'd have to settle for doing nothing. Or I might have called someone and said loudly so the guy could hear, "And this total asshole snapped in my ear. I know. I can't believe people do stuff like that either!"

    parentingBYdummies says

No. Not okay. But, it's not okay to slap a crying baby at Walmart either, but loser people do that too. Know what is ok? If you woulda drop kicked him in the balls. Your girls would have totally forgiven you when they were recounting the story to their girls as adults…"When we were little your Grandma drop kicked a guy at the store…" But, you did the right thing. No need to drop to his level. Except that it woulda felt good!

I hate those kind of moments…when I am so mad my blood is boiling, and I am almost biting my tongue completely off!!Good for you for not kicking him;)

    Stu Pidasso says

I, being the son raised by six older brothers, have the tendancy to say those things that most sane people only think of saying. I suffer for my lack of ability to properly filter my mouth though. You are to be commended for not sinking to the level of his rudeness….however a poke in the eye probably would have sufficed. As a felon-in-waiting trying to behave in the world of grown ups, I must recommend "killing him with kindness"…..the sticky icky sugary sweet kindness that one can just feel the fecitiousness oozing from within.

    blueviolet says

I had to just sit here for a minute and try to process the fact that he did that to you. I still can't wrap my head around it. That was so not cool.

  9. 37

    Jennifer says

Oh he…. no. Never appropriate. And you handled the situation way better than I would have.

And I agree with Dumb Mom. A drop kick would have been totally appropriate.

    SPEAKING FROM THE CRIB says

you should start your own dot com entitled a-holes of the world similar to people of walmart he could've been your first subject

    Nicole says

Ok….I definitely agree with the glare….he deserved that at a minimum! Never appropriate to do something like that! Did I tell you about the Doctor who gave me the NFL style "Time Out" when she felt I was talking too much at our initial consultation? Yeah…another inappropriate, inpatient situation. I just think some people are not overly concerned with practicing some impulse control…..so glare away, glare away!! 🙂 Thanks for sending your Momma's my way, I'm getting some great feedback!

    Simply Mommy says

Oh no!!! I would've had steam blowing out of my ears. What a typical male a$$!!! I had quite the encounter with a plumber yesterday. A glare wouldn't have even touched it. well, unless in burned a hole through him. 🙂

  13. 42

    Cristin says

Oh, you showed some nice restraint there… I may or may not have told off an old lady in a parking lot today, I may or may not have called her a very bad word (after I shut the car door so the kids wouldn't hear it of course.)

  14. 44

    T Rex Mom says

Do you think that guy had an psych issues? Completely inappropriate behavior. He should have been totally embarrassed but I'm sure he wasn't.

  15. 45

    CC says

NO. It is never appropriate. But then, neither is honking the nano-second after the light turns green at the person in front of you who just putting her food on the clutch.

    Ugh. People!!

  16. 47

    Carissa(GoodnCrazy) says

Love it. As in… I hear you..

It's like honking in Utah.. not okay. In New Jersey? Expected. But in Utah.. only for getting attention and saying hi! 🙂

  17. 48

    scrappysue says

NEVER OK – not even when you're a RUDE MAN!!! such as the one you encountered – i'm reactionary too – always!!!

  18. 50

    Michelle says

Are you kidding me? If that would have happened to me I probably would have obsessed for hours over how I should have responded!

That would have been really funny if you would has asked to take his picture.

  19. 52

When did I become my Mom says

That's disgustingly rude. I'm sure he felt like an idiot when he realized you were right. Good for you for being classy enough not to kick him in the shins, the way I have no doubt you wanted to.

  20. 54

    Life with Kaishon says

Get out of the city! The lady behind me in line at the grocery store BUTTED in front of me tonight. It was a self checkout line. And I was pointed towards one line, but when one opened up on the other side I was turning the cart but not before she could pop over. Kid you not. Isn't that cRaZiNesS? I wanted to pop her!

  21. 55

    Angela says

That is totally inappropriate, but unfortunately people do it all the time. I can tell you from experience working in retail. And the closer to Christmas it is, the worse it gets. You handled yourself pretty well, though!

  22. 56

    Kacey R. says

Let's track him down and both kick him…and snap at him and kick him some more. OK, sorry, I know this isn't a very nice comment but it's really what I'm thinking and it may be fun. We would be teaching him a lesson after all – that snapping is rude AND annoying. The kicking? That's just for fun.

I'm glad you know I'm not a totally crazy person and I am not really serious about this, but the thought of it all is kinda fun…sad huh? I really shouldn't miss kickboxing anymore. Apparently it does me good and I usually would not be advocating violence. ;D lol

  23. 58

    pam says

Never!! I would be so pissed if someone did that to me. Though, I have seen it all, and know how rude people can be.

  24. 60

    Tiffany says

I just started reading your blog and love it! This is so funny… I think it is NEVER appropriate to do this, but am amazed by the nerve of people… My nephew loved to suck on his pacifier (the nuk kind) upside down and when my sister-in-law was grocery shopping with him one day, a lady behind her in line looked at him and said "oh look your little paci is upside down…" Thats not so bad, but then she proceeded to reach over Angella and take it and turn it right side up! Can you believe that! The best was that before Angella could say anything, my nephew gave the woman a very dirty look and growled at her as he turned it back the way he liked it! Its great when our kids do the responding for us!

  25. 81

    Shannon says

Yeah, I would have been stemaing mad too. You did a great job at showing restraint. Not sure I could have. Way to go!

  26. 82

    Lula! says

It is never appropriate to finger snap at ANYONE.

Unless, of course, you are imitating Bon Qui Qui and do the head and neck roll to go along with said snaps. "Girl lemme TELL YOU SOMETHIN'!"

  27. 83

    Live.Love.Eat says

Never appropriate. And there would have been nothing wrong with you saying what you wanted to say "did you really just snap your fingers in my ear?"
