Comment Numbering

Unfortunately, this little tutorial will only be germain to those of you on WordPress using the Thesis Theme. Oh, and those of you that care.

I figured though that since I do (care, that is) maybe you will too.

This is my “How-to get each comment on your blog to show it’s sequential place individually”.

What I mean by that is, if you want to know how to get each comment to have a number by it showing you the comment was say, number 4, or 37, or 239, then this tutorial is for you.

A little back ground though first, because, what fun is a tutorial if you don’t know WHY one felt it was necessary?

I searched and searched and searched some more for a plug in that would number my comments individually and sequentially. I couldn’t find one. So, I enlisted the help of a few friends. And guess what? They didn’t know of one either.

Then one of my said friends came through for me. Scary Mommy was wasting her precious time trying to help a friend out (she knew that I would rather DIE than try to count through 12o0 comments for a giveaway whereby a winner needed to be chosen) when she stumbled upon the answer for me.

It lay, not in a plug in, but in my Options under Appearance. I have the Thesis template, so under Appearance in my dashboard I clicked on Thesis Options. In the Display Options, I opened the Comment button and voila, there was an option that I checked and saved which said, “show comment numbers”.

You will want to do the same thing should you want the same result.

Now, you might have to make another adjustment as well if you want all of your comments to show in order. In the Settings of your blog (in the dashboard) there is a Discussion option. If you click on that, you’ll find a few subcategories. Under Other Comment Settings, you’ll see that you have a few options for the number of comments that will display at one time as well as the order in which they should be displayed.

Like this:

Break comments into pages with

top level comments per page and the

page displayed by default

comments at the top of each page

I upped the number of allowable comments per page (who says I can’t aim high?) and suddenly all of the comments from my latest giveaway appeared numbered in chronological order.

My heart did a little singing at the sight.

  4. Wow, Angie! This is the best. post. evah. (I used evah, rather than ever, to emphasize my enthusiasm.)

Honestly, your blog tips are the center of my universe, the light of my life. Please don’t stop blogging, otherwise I might have to curl up and die. Do you have some sort of image, other than your blog button, that I could print and hang in my house? I feel like I am not doing enough to demonstrate to the world just how big of a fan I really am.

Have you considered putting your tips into an e-Book yet? I hear they are becoming pretty popular.

  8. Too funny…it’s always where you least expect it, right?

The downfall though of having all of those comments on one page, the commenter has to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to add that comment. And, 2000 comments would be a long way down.

    That’s a tribe.

Anyway , I do use thesis. And I am totally going to hook up my theme with this tip. Now, if I could just get 1200 people to comment on my blog. Lol.
