DIY Clothes Hanger Belt Organization {gift idea}

How to organize belts using clothes hangers is super simple with a little DIY work.  All you need to do is drill a few holes into the bottom of a wooden coat hanger, screw in some hooks and you have the perfect DIY belt hanger organization that is sturdy, functional and best of all, space saving.  Once you’ve made one of these belt hangers, you’ll never want to use anything else to organize your belts!  Inspired by my DIY Clothes Hanger Jewelry Organization project, this makes a perfect gift for dad!!!!

Clothes Hanger Belt Organization

How to Make Belt Hangers:

  1. Find/Purchase wooden hangers to use for belt organizers.
  2. Mark the bottom of hanger where you’d like your hooks to be placed.  I used a sharpie marker and marked about a 1″ distance on one hanger and 2″ on another.  The nice thing about this project is that you can organize your hooks however works best for your belts.  If you have bulky belts, you might want lots of space in between the hooks.  If you have dainty belts, you might only want .5″ between the hooks.
  3. Drill a hole in each spot that you’ve marked so that it’s easy to screw in your hooks if you have a screw driver and drill bit.  If you don’t, you can just screw in your hooks, it will just take more elbow grease.
  4. Arrange your belts on the hooks.
  5. Hang belt hanger in closet and enjoy! {{or give it as a Father’s Day gift like my kids are planning!}}

FREE Teacher Appreciation Printable {SODA-lighted}

Can you believe Teacher Appreciation week is coming up?  I ADORE trying to come up with clever, fun and inexpensive ways to tell my kids teachers that they are appreciated, valued and not taken for granted.  This year I’ve taken to drinking far too much SODA so it’s no surprise that the first thing that came to mind to give my kids teachers for teacher appreciation week was their favorite SODA.   I have the perfect printable for room parents and parents with multiples in the same class!

teacher appreciation tags

Since I have twins in the same class and am no stranger to being a room parent, I had tags designed that say, “We’ve been SODA-lighted to have you for our Teacher this year”. This way, room moms have something to give to the teacher from the class AND if a parent has two children in one class, they have a printable they can use as well!  Plus, the colors work great for either male or female teachers!

How to Make Tissue Paper Flowers {ombre}

Making Ombre Tissue Paper Flowers as a  Craft are easy as 1-2-3 with this DIY tutorial! They are even easier to make than tissue paper balls, and making them in ombre colors is SO in right now!  All you need is tissue paper, scissors, pencil, plain sheet of paper and a stapler.

Ombre Tissue Paper Flowers

Materials Needed

Materials Needed

  • 4-6 packages of tissue paper in complimentary shades
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Plain sheet of paper (to make template)
  • Pencil

Instructions for Making Tissue Paper Flowers

Instructions

  • To make the template: use a plain white piece of copy paper, fold it on the diagonal to make a square.  Trim the excess edge off.  Fold the paper in half again (it is now in four folds).  Use a pencil to free hand draw a scallop edge.  Note: it does not have to be perfect, you won’t notice once you assemble the flowers.  Using scissors cut along the scallop.  Voila!  You now have a template.
  • Cut each shade of tissue paper into 7″X7″ squares.  Note: You need 6-8 square sheets per flower.
  • Fold each flower stack of  7″x7″ squares in half and then half again.  Lay your template (still folded up) on top of your tissue paper and cut along the scallop.  Once again, it does not have to be perfect.
  • Once you have cut the tissue paper, unfold it and place two staples in the center.  Follow this process for each flower.
  • Pull up the top layer of tissue paper and gently squeeze it together and crimp the base of it near the staple.  Do the same thing with the remaining layers except the last layer.  This will be the base of the flower.
  • Once you have finished this process with all of the flowers you can display them as a beautiful centerpiece.
  • After your party you can use them as beautiful present toppers.

DIY Shamrock Banner {St Patricks Day Crafts}

Making a St Patricks Day Craft that is useful, pretty and decorative is easy as 1-2-3 with this DIY Shamrock Banner!  Most people have all of the materials on-hand, it’s super inexpensive, and I guarantee it’ll bring a smile to your face.  The best part is that it doesn’t take long to make and it’s absolutely kid friendly.  Get into the spirit of St Paddy’s Day with this fun banner, which is a variation of a paper heart tutorial that I shared over on Skip to my Lou!

Shamrock Banner

Materials Needed

Shamrock Banner materials

  • Glue Stick
  • Stapler
  • Ribbon
  • Card Stock {printed or solid} for the pendant pieces
  • (2) pieces of 12″ X 12″ solid colored card stock for hearts
  • paper cutter

Instructions for Making Hearts

shamrock banner instructions

  • Cut (2) 12X12″ pieces of scrapbooking paper into 1″ strips. Note: each piece of paper will make two hearts. We used 3 pieces of paper to make 6 hearts.
  • Cut six of each size: 12″, 10″, and 8″ strips. Set aside the six 4″ strips that came from the 8″ cutting. This sounds confusing, but basically, for each piece of paper you’ll have 3 sets of strips. A 12″ set, a 10″ set, a 8″ set and then the 4″ left over strips.
  • Use the glue stick to glue two of the 4″ strips together. This will be the tab that the heart will hang from at the top.
  • Take two piles of the 12″, 10″, 8″ strips and put them face to face; the order is important. Start with the tab in the middle and pancake them in this order going outwards from the tab: 12″, 10″, 8″. Staple the strips at the bottom.
  • Fold the top of the strips over and pinch to form a heart and staple at the bottom.
  • Now that your 3 hearts are made, staple them together to form your shamrock.  Snip off the tabs of the side hearts.

  • Trace and cut your pendant pieces.  I used an old pendant piece as a template. If you don’t have one at home, you can find one in any shape on line to download for free to use.

I punched holes in the top corners of my pendant pieces. I then threaded them through the ribbon to assemble the banner. It was really simple and turned out so well!

10 Valentine’s Day Crafts for Children {guest post}

When it comes to the holidays my kids are always looking for fun themed crafts to do. It might be Christmas or New Year’s or even the Fourth of July, but they will insist we do something fun to celebrate it together. Valentine’s Day is no different. Though it started out as a day for lovers it has become a fun tradition for kids to give out Valentine’s cards to their friends and family, and do not forget all those kids in their class! With that in mind here are some of our favorite and affordable Valentine’s Day craft activities:

crayon hearts

1.  Crayon Heart Rainbows –Trying to avoid candy and still help my kids make something fun for Valentine’s Day giveaways, we discovered this gem of an idea. Instead of throwing out all those broken bits and pieces of Crayons in our playroom we gathered them together and removed the paper bits. After they are all clean and ready to melt we distributed them evenly in a silicone baking tray with heart shapes. Each little heart had enough Crayon so that when it melted it would form a sturdy coloring rainbow! I put the tray into the oven for a few minutes on 375 until the Crayons had melted completely. No sense having hunks of colors sticking out. Then before it cooled and hardened I slipped in a piece of yarn (string or curling ribbon would work as well) to attach name tags or greeting cards. After the melted hearts had cooled, my kids and I sat down to come up with fun things to say like “You color my world” or “You make life colorful”. The kids love to color with the rainbow hearts too because they never know what color they will get.

kiss rings

2.  Diamond Kiss Rings –If you want the kids to feel like royalty and still have a bit of candy to give out then this idea is for you. All you need are some Hershey’s Kisses candy (I like silver) and some of those fuzzy pipe cleaners (I like gold or red). Start out with two pipe cleaners. Form them into an X shape and place the Kiss bottom down on the center of the X. Then wrap the pipe cleaners up around to hold the Kiss like it is a jewel. Twist in the center so that it does not fall out and then form the rest of the pipe cleaner into a ring. Twisting around your own finger is easiest. There you have it! Diamond rings for kids to give away and eat. Add name tags and cute saying for a different take on the day of love.

3.  Button and Heart Bracelet – This is an easy and fun activity for even very young children, with help of course. I am just a sucker for anything with buttons on it. In this easy to do craft all you need is some yarn or ribbon and red or pink construction paper. And of course the buttons! You can also use some of that thin foam stuff so that it will hold up longer. Have the kids cut out a heart shape that will fit on their wrist. Then punch holes in the sides and thread through the yarn. Cover the holes with the buttons and voila, instant bracelets! You can have the kids write their names on the hearts and even decorate it with stickers, glitter, or drawings. They can make these as gifts too, with personalized hearts for everyone. You can even layer the hearts to create cute designs, like pink and red or red and white.

lollipop card

4.  Hand Me a Lollipop Card –This is a fun craft for kids to give away to friends and family. It will require a little preparation though. First, take a picture of your child with him holding his fist close to the camera and smiling. Then print out the photos and cut a small hole in the center of his hand. Have the kids place a lollipop stick through the hole and it will look like they are handing the candy treat out! How cute is that? You can add a fun caption to the photo or let the kids write a personal message on the back of the photo. I think it looks better with the little Dum-dum pops, but whatever you can find will work. You can even do it with mints or Tootsie Rolls by stapling the edge of the wrapper to the photo instead.

5.  Heart Attack Box – This cute idea is one that would be great for the kids to give to Dad or the grandparents. Essentially you get a small box and fill it with paper hearts (red and pink). Each heart has something nice about the person written on it. This would make your children sit down and really think about what they appreciate about that person. Maybe they could write something like “takes me to the park”, “plays ball with me”, or “shares his ice cream”. Small children could just draw pictures to illustrate the things. This is a great way to encourage thoughtfulness and have fun watching the person pull out one heart after another and read them all. It will probably make everyone tear up (or maybe I am just sappy like that).

6.  Valentine Mail Box – I remember making Valentine’s mail boxes at school when I was little. We would bring a small box, whatever we had at home, and then cover it with red or pink construction paper. After it was covered we could decorate the box with our name and things we loved. It is kind of a mixture of Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, but it makes for a fun way for the kids to keep track of all those Valentine’s Day gifts and cards they got. Cut a slot in the top for the cards to drop into and make sure you leave a way to open the box without ripping it apart. Who does not like to open mail, right?

bookmark

7.  Book Marks–This easy gift idea is free and only requires a trip to your local hardware or paint store. You know all those paint sample strips? Those racks and racks that they have over by the buckets of paint? Well, those are free and fun to use in crafts. Get yourself a handful of shades of red and pink and a heart shaped hole punch. In each of the paint color sections punch a hole and make sure you punch one on the very top too. Collect the heart shaped confetti to use in a card later. Then thread a piece of red or pink yarn or ribbon through the top hole. Voila- an instant Valentine’s Day book mark for you or your kids to give away. It is so cute and easy to make.

heart stamping

8.  Heart Stamping –Kids love to stamp, but why waste money on buying stamps for them to use. Instead, make your own heart shaped stamp out of an empty toilet paper roll. First bend the roll lengthwise down the middle (like a hot dog) until the ends form a heart shape. Then tape it into place with some clear tape. Get out the red and pink finger paints and thin them out a bit or use a red stamp pad. Have the kids go wild and decorate a white piece of paper with their heart stamps. They can even write the person’s name on the paper first and then create a ring or heart of hearts around the name. Kids love to stamp and will have a blast crafting their artistic creation.

9.  Glitter Heart Pins– Wearing your crafts is something that most kids love to do. Playing with glue and glitter is another big draw. Combine the best of both worlds with this fun Valentine’s Day activity. Have the kids cut out a heart shape out of sturdy paper. Then glue, tape or even staple a safety pin to the top back of the heart. The kids can go crazy decorating their heart in glitter, glue, stickers or whatever they would like. They can even make heart name tags. After their creation dries they can pin their heart to their shirt and wear it proudly.

10.  Stained Glass Hearts – This is a great craft for even very small children. All you need is thin white paper, like printer paper, and red or pink finger paints. Thin out the paints a little so that they will dry somewhat transparently. Then have the kids cut a heart shape out of the white paper and go crazy smearing the paint in fun patterns all over it. Let it dry and then hang it in the window for the sun to some through. You could even do a heart mobile or wind catcher with the same idea if you would like.

These are just a few of the fun Valentine’s Day crafts that you can do with your kids. All of them are easy and affordable so there is no reason to dawdle. Have fun and enjoy the holiday of love with your children!

Making a Fabric Scrap Heart Wreath is a DIY craft that is super easy, cheap {or free} if you have fabric laying around and perfect for jazzing up your holiday decorating or parties!  It’s a fabulous way to recycle wire hangers instead of just throwing them out, too.  All it takes is a few snips of the scissors, some fun tearing action and tying some knots!

First:  Find the material you’d like to use as well as a wire hanger.

Second:  Manipulate/bend the hanger into a heart shape.

Step 1:  Snip the material at 1 to 1.5 inch intervals with scissors.

Step 2:  Tear the material starting where you snipped into strips.

Step 3:  Cut the length of the strips down so they aren’t so long {if they are} .  I made my strips 10″ and 8″ but you can make yours whatever length you’d like.   Most people make their strips shorter. I wanted a longer look.  My only advise it not to make your strips too short or you might have  difficulty tying them on the hanger.

Step 4:  Tie the strips of material onto the heart shaped hanger in an alternating pattern if you are using more than one material pattern.

Step 5:  You are done!  Doesn’t it look fun? Super easy, right?  Now you can display it in your home for a vintage look, or, it’s perfect for embellishing a holiday or event.  I made mine for my daughters cupcake themed birthday party and it was the perfect compliment!

Peppermint Sugar Scrubs are easy to make, package adorably and are good for your skin!  Plus, they are the perfect holiday homemade gift!  Sugar Scrubs are one of the best gifts ever!  They are my new latest craze {as you know} and after the recent success of my Lemon Sugar Scrub for Mother’s Day gifts, my Coffee Sugar Scrub for Teacher Appreciation, and my cherry and peach sugar scrubs just because, I decided to go all out and try a Peppermint Scrub to go with my fruity sugar scrubs!  So, here’s an easy-peasy, Peppermint sugar scrub recipe (with a FREE printable tag) that’s perfect for gift giving this holiday season!

Peppermint Sugar scrub

I’ve been making a lot of sugar scrubs in little batches, and this recipe filled up 3 of the craft organization storage jars by Recollections I purchased at Michael’s (6 in a package for $7.19).  I’ve had so much fun finding interesting containers to put sugar scrubs in!  The recipe is super simple.  I love that sugar scrubs can be used on the hands, feet and body.  I especially like this one for the feet.  I like to use sugar scrubs in the shower because they are such great exfoliators and the hot water dissolves the sugar crystals before they can be too abrasive.

Peppermint Sugar Scrub Recipe

Peppermint Sugar Scrub Ingredients

Mix Together {this recipe fills 3 of the craft containers I have pictured}

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 droppers full of peppermint oil {I purchased mine for $4.99 from Michael’s.  You can find it in the soap making section}
  • approximately 20 drops of red soap colorant (I purchased a pack of 4 colors at Michaels for $4.00)

Decorate Jar

Peppermint Sugar Scrub

I used embellishments I had at home to decorate the jar.  Ribbons I had in my craft supply closet were used to tie on the “Peppermint Sugar Scrub” tag.  The tag was designed by Tricia Rennea exclusively for Seven Clown Circus, and can be downloaded for free!   The sugar scrub was super easy to make and the whole project took me a total of 20 minutes including tying on the printable!  It’s THAT easy.

That’s it!  The Peppermint Sugar Scrub is read to use or give as a gift!

Directions for Making a Magazine Christmas Tree:

First:  Find a Magazine that you’d like to use.

Magazine Christmas Tree

Step 1:  Open the Magazine to the middle and then make the first fold by folding the right corner down along the inner spine of the magazine as shown in picture #1.

Step 2:  Make the second fold by folding the first fold over one more time so that the fold looks like a tie as illustrated in picture #2.

Step 3:  The third fold is made by folding up the bottom piece as shown in image #3 so that there is a flat and even edge on the bottom.  Super easy since there is already a line to follow with the line of the paper.

Step 4:  Continue this pattern for every page of the magazine.

Step 5:  You are done!  Doesn’t it look great? Super easy, right?  Now you can display it in your home for a fun vintage look!
