Making a Back-to-School Teacher Gift that is useful, pretty and smells good is easy as 1-2-3 with this homemade air freshener tutorial! Most people have all of the ingredients on-hand {or can use easy substitutions for the packaging}, it’s super inexpensive, and I guarantee the teacher will love a pretty air freshener to keep stale smells out of their classroom! Plus, it’s always nice to give a gift that’s not edible.
Homemade Air Freshener
I found this idea recently online {can’t remember where but will link it up when I find it} and adjusted it to suit my needs! I love how the internet has so many ideas that can be used and tweaked in so many different ways!
You’ll need:
- a few mason jar (s) – {if you are going to take the time to make this craft, you’ll want to make more than one, right?}
- spray paint to spray the outside rim of the lid of the jar. I painted the inside piece too, but you don’t need to.
- a nail
- a hammer
- scissors {to cut the fabric into a circle the size of the lid}
- fabric that coordinates with the color of spray paint that you are coloring the lid
- ribbon to add a little extra bling to the jar
- baking soda
- essential oil {I used cherry and raspberry that I purchased on ebay-I think lemon would be really nice as well}
- {forget that pink gadgety thing in the picture-I thought I’d need it to punch holes in the fabric, but that didn’t work out.}
Directions:
- Spray paint the outer rim of lid of jar
- cut fabric to fit lid of jar
- punch holes in lid with nail and hammer
- add baking soda and at least 10 drops of essential oil to jar
- screw on lid
- embellish with ribbon {I used a paint chip card and a punch to make the tag}
- give as a gift!!!!
I guarantee the teacher will LOVE it!

Not sure how strong the smell is, but maybe you could just leave that little inner do-hicky for the jar out all together? Then, no holes have to be punched in the fabric and the smell would just come through. Do that even make sense?

I don’t know how she got the perfect finish in the end when the 2nd picture looks very unkept. The fabric is not cut perfect (I wouldn’t want to do a project that requires perfection) yet in the final display the fabric is perfectly tucked into the green lid, how is that? Also how did she get those ball looking thing in bottom. I want the jar to look good and not DIY

The lid remains on the air freshener so the fabric doesn’t need to be cut perfectly.
The lip of the mason jar ring hides any imperfections. The ball thing is a ribbon I bought at Michaels or through Stampin’ Up. YOu can find something similar at any craft store.
